Gabrielle Union (@itsgabrielleu) Covers Essence Magazine (@essencemag) & Chats On New Holiday Movie, “Almost Christmas!”

Gabrielle Union is truly a woman of class and the definition of a strong black audacious woman.

Union sat down recently to discuss Hollywood, marriage, motherhood, politics, sports and 90s R & B for the November issue of ESSENCE. Union spoke out on why she’s comfortable sharing the spotlight in the comedic family movie, Almost Christmas  (in theaters November 11) as well as her leading role in the hit television series, Being Mary Jane (returning in January).

“I’m at an age where my ego doesn’t live and die by how many lines I have,” says the 43-year-old stunner, who’s rocking Lanvin, Diane von Furstenberg and Michael Kors Collection in her cover story. “There’s more to life than line counting.”

Wise words spoken by a woman who truly knows her worth and knows that she is still valuable no matter how many lines or roles she obtains. This is why we love Gabrielle Union! She knows her worth and let’s nothing hinder her growth.

Everything meant to make you fall, Union has proven in her career and character that it should not hinder who you are but yet simply drive you into becoming all that you desire to be within.

Violence in general is a terrible thing, but in Chicago it seems to be a virtual war zone! As Kanye West pointed out at last night’s Video Music Awards, twenty-two alone were killed just last weekend in the Windy City. This has to stop! One of those killed was NBA Star, Dwyane Wade’s cousin, Nykea Aldridge in a drive by shooting. Public outcry has been great about this senseless loss of life, and her cousin is heartbroken.

Thankfully there has been a break in the case.

Nykea Aldridge, 32, the mother of four, was pushing a baby stroller Friday afternoon in Chicago’s South Side when she was shot. Police said she was not the intended target of the shooting. Aldridge’s child was not injured.
Anthony Guglielmi, a Chicago Police Department spokesman, said two brothers, Darwin, 26, and Derren Sorells, 22, were charged in the shooting.
Guglielmi posted on Twitter that Derren Sorells is a documented member of the Gangster Disciples. Sorells is on parole. Darwin Sorells was a co-conspirator in the crime and also on parole for a felony gun charge. He was sentenced to six years in prison in January 2013 but was released early, Guglielmi said.

Whether these men meant to kill Nykea or not they need to be put under the jail! Our prayers go out to Dwyane Wade and the families involved!

[VIDEO] The 2016 ESPYS: Show Recap

Outside of Draft Day and Game Night, last night was the night of Sports Royalty! The biggest names in sports all got together for the 2016 Espy Awards with superstar wrestler turned actor John Cena hosted the annual show.

The ESPY Awards began with a call to action from basketball’s biggest stars including LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, Dwyane Wade and Chris Paul and ended with a tribute to Muhammad Ali.

Zaevion Dobson’s mother gave a moving speech while accepting the Arthur Ashe Courage Award in his memory. In case you were wondering who Zaevion was or why he was honored, Dobson, was a 15-year-old football player, who was killed while shielding two girls from gunfire in Tennessee. A heroic act indeed.

Craig Sager delivered a similarly moving speech about his battle with cancer as he accepted the Jimmy V Perseverance Award. “If we don’t have hope and faith, we have nothing,” Sager said after Vice President Joe Biden presented the award to him. “Whatever I might have imagined, a terminal diagnosis would do to my spirit, it summoned quite the opposite, the greatest appreciation for life. So I will never get up, and I will never give in. I will keep fighting.”

The 2016 ESPYS: Winner’s Circle!

Last night’s ESPYS saluted some of Sports and Entertainments biggest stars and we can’t do any awards show recaps without spotlighting them. Follow the jump for Hey Mikey ATL’s full Winner’s Circle list.

The 2016 ESPYS were hosted by actor and wrestling superstar John Cena live from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, California and aired on the ABC. In addition to the reveal of winners in all nominated categories, the ESPYs honored Kobe Bryant, Peyton Manning and Abby Wambach with the Icon Award. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar also paid tribute to Muhammad Ali.

Body image is not just something women are plagued with – men are affected by it too. The way one sees themselves can be totally different than what everyone else sees and sometimes, not liking the way we look can hinder us. Congratulations are in order for NBA superstar Dwyane Wade who has finally stripped down to his birthday suit on the latest cover of ESPN the Magazine‘s Body Issue.

The Miami Heat guard explains why he’s been so reluctant to strip down:

I was just never comfortable until about four years ago, when I started feeling comfortable with my body overall. As you go through life, you get more comfortable with yourself. It’s like everything else with life—you change, you grow. People might think it’s simple, but for me it was hard to even feel comfortable walking around naked when it’s just me and my wife. So the thought of doing it at a photo shoot in front of people [laughs]—it was like, “No way ever.

When it comes to favorite Black celebrity couples, Denzel and Pauletta, Will and Jada, Omar and Keisha and Jay and Beyonce are some of the names always come out of people’s mouths but there’s always a couple or two left out of the mix; and Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade are one of them.

Earlier this year, Hollywood power couple Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade announced that they’d be taking part in a new venture with HGTV and it looks like filming for the project is now underway. Gabrielle has becen very active on social media outlet SnapChat over the past few months, and just recently, she shared a few snaps of her and her hubby on set for the new project with one of the snaps including the caption, “Our HGTV Show…Day 1.”

The couple first confirmed their partnership with HGTV back in March, revealing that the upcoming show would consist of cameras following them as they renovate and resell homes in the suburban Florida area. (Florida must be a gold mine for folks to renovate – mostly all the shows on HGTV and the Fixer Upper channels feature Florida as a prime locale. I may have to look into that.)

Dwyane Wade plays shooting guard for the Miami Heat for over ten years and he and Gabby have been residents of the Sunshine state for years. Congratulations you guys!

Dwyane Wade is easily one of the greatest basketball players in the NBA. The man makes the game look like ballet the way he moves. Then he also has a pretty gorgeous wife, Gabrielle Union, that only makes him shine a little more. Still, we find that not even someone as admired as this celebrity athlete is beyond reproach or judgment from his so-called fans. Especially when it comes to something as simple and seemingly uninteresting as black toenail polish….right? Wrong! The bees are stinging, and this time it is not for Beyonce!
