Underground (@UndergroundWGN)- “Troubled Water”

Underground begins with desperation as the remaining members of the Macon 7 has split apart. Boo and Moses have gone their own way, while Cato, Noah, Rosalee, and Henry make it out on their own. They find themselves running for their lives after Henry asks a White man for a handout. Noah and Cato admonish him for being so impetuous, but he tells them they have been hiding for weeks and he only did it because he was hungry. At the plantation, the Reverend arrives and talks religion with Tom. He asks him about his soul and that of his slaves. Desperate to gain his support for Senate, he entertains him as Suzanna gives birth. One of the house slaves tells them she has given birth to a boy and Tom names him Samuel, much to Ernestine’s chagrin. Up North, John and the members of the Underground work on their secret hideaway until Kyle arrives and drafts him into the Marshalls to help them round up runaways.

Noah and the others spot a group of Whites having a party own a boat. He and Cato decide to take the boat from them to get downstream faster and hopefully get some food. Rosalee is against it, feeling it is wrong to do so. Noah ignores her and with Cato and Henry he takes the boat. August finds them and holds them hostage until Rosalee manages to release the boat from the dock. They manage to disarm, but not before he grabs Rosalee and pulls her into the water with him! The two of them struggle in the water, with Noah believing she cannot swim. He tries to get a clean shot on August, but only does so when Rosalee reveals she can swim and heads back to the boat. Noah shoots August in the back and they float downstream. That night, Tom tries to come onto Ernestine, but she resists him, telling him it is not right. The Reverend spots her coming out of Tom’s office. Up North, John uses the Marshalls to locate and protect runaways. Kyle questions him about the two runaways that attacked him and Elizabeth. He lies and tells him they would never harbor runaways. The two investigate a barn and Kyle is knocked out by a runaway–a member of The Underground, Clyde. He begs for John’s help.

Ernestine goes to see Sam and demands to know what he knows about Noah. He inadvertently admits she was not suppose to run off him with him, and admonishes his mother for leaving him to work in The Big House years ago. She tells him now is now the time for their problems and that they must help Rosalee however they can. She demands he tell her everything. Josey makes Elizabeth serve them as if they were slaves and then demands they tell him what has happened to his wife. John continues to tell him he knows nothing and was just finishing law school years ago when Tippy was taken away from him. Josey punishes him for “lying” and tells him he will show what happens to slaves that lie to their masters. His friend leaves him, telling him he wants no part of what he is doing.  Noah teaches Rosalee the song to freedom, so she can set out on her own. He tells her he is going back for the rest of The Macon 7. He recounts he first heard of free Blacks and that meeting Henry reminded him that he had to try and make it to freedom. Rosalee kisses him. The next morning, the slave catchers’ dogs pick up Noah and Rosalee’s scent. Noah tells her to run ahead of him as he deals with the dogs. She refuses, and pulls up a few plants from the ground and covers them with it just as the dogs make it to them. The flowers poison the dogs, preventing them from tracking them.

Underground (@UndergroundWGN)- “Lord’s Day”

Underground begins on a Sunday as the slaves and their owners attend churches, albeit separately. The White preacher and Moses convey the Creation Story in their own way and explain why Sunday is holy as it is considered the Sabbath, the day God rested from His work. Noah realizes that no one would expect them to run away on that day and it would give them a huge head start. Meanwhile, Zeke mourns the loss of his child, but is interrupted when Moses comes to warn him that Sarafina is being taken away to be sold. As the slavers put her on the wagon, Suzanna comments on how she simply cannot have a child killer on her plantation. Pearly Mae brings her a bonnet and says the 23rd Psalms to her. Zeke charges into the wagon, knocking off its wheel and punches out the overseer! Noah and Moses try to restrain him, but the overseer knocks him out.

Noah goes to see Sam and tells him they are running in six days. They decide the only way to get to freedom is to get across the bridge over the river without being noticed. Sam decides to make hooks and has Noah create a harness for each of them to get across under the bridge without ever being noticed. Moses tells Sam and Noah that Pearly Mae has written their freedom papers, but that they still need the Master’s seal for it to be certified.  Sam goes to the Big House to visit his mother and sister as they make molasses. He talks to Rosalee privately and warns her against going, fearing if they are caught she will be ravaged or worst. She tells him she still has not made up her mind and that their mother does not know. Sam tells her that Noah has tasked her with the most important part of the plan–to get the seal!

They realize the River Jordan is code for the Ohio River. Noah tells them their plan is simple to to figure out a way off the plantation, around the other plantations, and up North. Sam begins to doubt his plans, due to their lack of detail and tells him he refuses to whipped for them not being prepared. Noah tells them all he needs them if they have a fighting chance and to decide then and there if they are going. They all agree to go with him, just as their clandestine meeting is interrupted by Cato. They fear he will betray them at first, but Noah assures him that he is on their side and going with them. Cato doubts his resolve, however, when he sees his motley crew. At The Big House, Rosalee is given the could shoulder by some of the other female house slaves who feel she is uppity because she does not come to the annual plantation dance.

The next day, Tom talks with the other plantation owners, revealing how he became an owner, despite his Northern upbringing. He hopes to sway their support for his bid to become one of Georgia’s next Senators. Elsewhere, August discovers his chickens have been killed by a wolf, and also finds his chicken coop has been raided of eggs when he notices a pair of footprints. He prepares to go after the wolf and the assailant, but his slave advises him against it and tells him he should spend more time with his son. August tells his son to get his rifle to go hunting with him. Back at the plantation, Noah tells Moses and his wife, Pearly Mae, they will need freedom papers to remain free in the North. She agrees, but tells him they will mean nothing without the master’s seal. Noah decides they need paper and ink first, and plan to get it from a traveling merchant. In Philadelphia, John and Elizabeth go to a brothel to meet with Mr. Still and enlist with The Underground effort. While waiting for him a man opens a crate to find a couple of slaves have mailed themselves to freedom, using Henry Brown’s idea. The woman does not survive.

Underground begins with a slave, Noah, running from catchers and their dogs in a Georgia forest just outside of Macon. He manages to elude them in the thick of the brush, but a dog almost catches him. He manages to reach a wagon until he is snatched off and knocked out. Up North, John Hawkes, an avid abolitionist speaks on the steps of the nation’s capital, condemning slavery and what is happening to Dred Scott. However, no one pays him any attention. Back south, Noah is rounded up with a few other runaways and placed in shackles. His leg seems to be busted as he walks with a limp. A White man, August Pullman, rides by them on the way to the river to give his mule a drink. There, he finds a female runaway and tells her she is going the wrong direction. He draws out a map to the Ohio River for her in the mud and then hides her in his wagon as slave catchers approach. The catchers demand to check his wagon for runaways, but he throws a knife stabbing one in the hand when he touches his wagon and pulls a gun on the other. They leave angry and disappointed.

That night, Noah and the other slaves are left to sleep in a cabin. There he receives information from a dying slave on how to get to freedom with the words carved into the wall of the cabin. Noah tears cloths from his shirt and uses the man’s blood and imprints the words on to it. The next morning at The Macon Plantation, a field slave runs to The Big House to get Rosalee, a house slave and her mother, Ernestine, to midwife another field slave who has gone into labor early. The pregnant woman is in great pain due to a breach birth. The woman’s husband, waits outside, fretting the outcome, but the child, a boy, is delivered alive and well. They return to the Big House to finish preparing dinner for their master, Tom, and his wife, Suzanna. They plan their daughter, Mary’s, birthday party, and to decide to make it a political affair to gain the public’s favor to make Tom the Senator.

Noah arrives back at the plantation is about to be branded as a runaway until Tom questions him and determines he is not lying and was simply lost in the woods. However, he does have a slave driver whip him five times for each dollar he spent retirieving him. They send Rosalee to tend to his busted leg. Much to her surprise, he has been faking it the whole time. He continues to limp, however, to throw off any suspicion of running again. That night, Rosalee goes to visit the field slaves and runs into the woman she and her mother helped earlier. The woman tells her she has killed her newborn, not wanting him to grow up as a slave. Rosalee races to her cabin to find the child drowned in a tub of water. The next morning Rosalee finds it hard to concentrate on her work. Ernestine encourages her to focus and work and get her mind off what has happened. She tells her she can see why the woman killed her child and that she worries for Rosalee and her brothers.  August brings the runaway slave he was hiding to the authorities. The other slave catchers realize he lied to them. He claims his reward as they comment on how he brought her in without a scratch on her.
